1.7m train passengers in 2016 between Galway and Heuston

There were 1.7million passenger journeys made between Galway and Dublin last year representing a 6.6 per cent increase on 2015, Iarnrod Eireann told the Advertiser this week.

Improved economic circumstances, record tourist visitor numbers and events surrounding the 1916 Rising commemorations, contributed to the uplift in customers travelling by train.

Nationally passenger journeys grew by eight per cent with a total of 42.8million customers travelling with the company in 2016 a healthy increase on 2015 when 39.6million passenger journeys were made.

“Iarnród Éireann’s online fares continue to offer great value for money with heavily discounted fares available between Galway and Dublin when booked in advance. Free Wifi onboard all services means that customers can work or surf the web for leisure while they make their journey,” said a company spokesperson.

During 2017 Iarnród Éireann will continue to implement innovative promotions to increase passenger volumes by offering great value for money, reliable and comfortable services that are sustainable for the environment.

David Franks, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann said the company are pleased with the growth on the Galway-Dublin line. “Once again we have seen healthy growth on Intercity, Commuter and DART services in 2016. Our services represent excellent value for money and offer a comfortable and reliable travel experience” he added.
