Public meeting on childcare costs

Childcare costs are often the second biggest financial burden after mortgage or rent repayments, and a public meeting, organised by the Labour Party, takes place next month.

Labour city councillors Niall McNelis and Billy Cameron will host a public meeting on childcare on Friday Feburary 3 at 8pm in the Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra. The meeting will discuss the needs of parents, and those working in the sector, and what can be done to support them.

“Childcare costs in Ireland are among the highest in the world, while those working in the sector are paid too little to make ends meet,” said Cllr McNelis, who added the childcasre costs also impact on women’s decisions whether to stay in the workforce.

“It’s time we took the right steps to fix this issue for families across Ireland,” he said. “I believe the only way to do that is with proper investment in subsidised childcare, where the fees are capped for parents. Anything less is just lip service.”

The meeting is part of a Labour campaign across the State on the issue of childcare. Cllr McNelis is encouraging the public to attend to “discuss how we can make a real difference in people’s lives by taking the right steps on childcare”.
