Sing with the St Nicholas Singers for Candlemas

Concert to mark the official end of Christmas - Candlemas

DESPITE WHAT many think, January 6 is not the end of the Christmas season, its official close is February 2 and the often overlooked event of Candlemas - the Feast of the Purification, or Feast of the Presentation.

Candelmas marks Jesus's presentation at the temple and his undergoing of the Jewish brit milah ceremony, and over the centuries it has become a favourite subject for artists and composers.

As a result, the St Nicholas Singers will host a concert, Journey Into Light, inspired by the Feast of the Presentation, and members of the public who would like to sing with the choir are invited to take part in a series of rehearsals, under the direction of Mark Duley, ahead of the event. Rehearsals take place on Saturday January 28 (1.30pm to 6pm ), Saturday February 4 (10am to 5pm ), and Sunday 5 (2pm to 4pm ). They are open to all regardless of age or experience, and new members are welcome.

The concert is on Sunday February 5 at 5pm with a programme including the canticle Nunc Dimittis by Eccard and Lukaszewski; part one of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Christus; and Rutter’s challenging Hymn to the Creator of Light.

Registration, including rehearsals, scores, and refreshments, is €50 per person. Links to suitable recordings/rehearsal lines and details of scores will be sent to those interested. To book email [email protected] or [email protected] with your name, phone number, and voice part.
