A CONTROVERSIAL 1967 Czech film banned by the communist authorities, and an award winning film by legendary German film maker Wim Wenders, are to be shown in the Nuns Island Theatre.
Milos Forman's The Fireman's Ball will be screened on Monday January 23 at 8pm, while Wender's Wings Of Desire, will be shown on Monday January 30. Both screenings are part of a new event, entitled the Cinecola Screenings, which aims to celebrate international arthouse films - classic and contemporary - and enhance awareness, accessibility, and understanding of the form among film fans.
Comedy film The Fireman's Ball is a classic of the Czech New Wave from the director of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. However Fireman fell foul of the Soviet authorities who placed it on a list of "banned forever" films after Russia's invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
Romantic-fantasy film Wings Of Desire won the Best Director at Cannes in 1987. The film is about invisible, immortal angels who populate Berlin and listen to the thoughts of the human inhabitants and comfort those who are in distress.
