Irish-language-song club seeks new members

Club Amhránaíochta na Gaillimhe to be hosted by Bríd Ní Mhaoileoin of Flirt FM and Raidió na dTreabh

GALWEGIANS WHO like the idea of singing songs as Gaeilge - even if their Irish is far from perfect - around the fireside with others who enjoy doing the same, are sought to join Club Amhránaíochta na Gaillimhe.

The Galway Irish-language-song club - Club Amhránaíochta na Gaillimhe - is facilitated by Bríd Ní Mhaoileoin of the Flirt FM and Raidió na dTreabh radio show, Rogha Bhríde. Bríd's aim with the club is to give Irish back to the people.

"It's not rocket science," she says, "and this singing club is proving it, with participants who never practised Irish before, from Germany, Spain, France, Poland and the US, native speakers, fluent speakers, second-generation Irish, people with 'school Irish', and people who think they have no Irish - only they do! It's there and it's coming out!"

The club is run in the style of a workshop. Participants can drop in any time. Singing takes place around the fireside with candles, a welcoming atmosphere and a cup of tea. The club takes place on Tuesdays from 8pm to 9.30pm in Club Áras na nGael, 45 Dominick Street. Contribution for each session is €5.
