Change to busy city roundabout gets the

The Ffrench roundabout at Moneenageisha will be replaced with a signal controlled junction. Work is due to start on the project shortly and should be completed before the Volvo Ocean Race in late May.

The Galway City Council’s Transportation Unit is currently developing a detailed design following its evaluation of the eight submissions regarding the plans to replace the roundabout. Formal responses are being issued to all stakeholders who contributed to the consultation process.

The Galway Transportation Unit is confident that, once completed, the signal controlled junction will “offer immediate benefits” to pedestrians and cyclists.

“The junction will provide fully controlled crossings for pedestrians on all arms of the junction and advanced stop lines for cyclists,” a spokesperson said. “The new signalised junction will yield distinct advantages in terms of bus priority when incorporated into an Urban Traffic Control Centre for the city.”

Joe Tansey, the head of GTU, said this project forms a natural extension to the rollout of the outbound bus lane on the Dublin Road and a “vital element of our overall plan to significantly enhance traffic movement through the city by replacing a number of roundabouts with signalised junctions”.
