Major funding for Irish language programming under the sound and vision scheme

The Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, Seán Kyne, has welcomed the allocation of some €865,000 to Irish language projects under the Broadcasting Authority’s ‘Sound and Vision Scheme’.

The projects being funded include programmes on historical events, sports, music, and literature.

Deputy Kyne said: “I am delighted with the allocation to Irish language projects across TV and radio stations. Over half a million of the €865,300 allocation has been awarded to TG4 which has an excellent record of working with independent TV and radio production companies which support and increase the visibility and use of An Ghaeilge.

“The sound and vision scheme, which is operated by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, an agency under the remit of the Department of Communications, Climate Action, and Environment, provides funding for high quality programmes based on Irish culture and heritage and has supporting the Irish language as one of its key objectives.

“Given that the fund is linked to the TV licence fee it is fitting that funding is being provided for Irish language programming and it is very welcoming to see applications for such programmes from community radio stations.

“I encourage all broadcasters and production companies to consider applying for funding for Irish language projects in the next round of the scheme which closes for applications on February 9.”
