What is ‘wear and tear’?

If you have ever had an X-ray or MRI, you may have been told you have “wear and tear”. What is wear and tear and what is its cause?

Wear and tear is the same as osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, or spondylosis (if in the spine ) and can be used interchangeably. Osteoarthritis is when the top layer of cartilage breaks down and starts to wear away. Cartilage is a protective layer covering the bone which lets your joints move smoothly. When it wears away, you can experience pain, swelling, and reduced motion. The joints most commonly affected are the spine, hips, hands, and knees.

Several factors can increase your risk of osteoarthritis:

Injuries to the joints, such as from whiplash or sports, can allow onset of osteoarthritis, even in younger individuals.

Obesity can lead to osteoarthritis by putting extra pressure on the joints and causing them to wear faster than normal.

Genetics can increase the risk for osteoarthritis.

Repetitive bad postures in work and at home can put more strain on the joints, causing wear.

Just like when your car is out of alignment and the tyres wear unevenly, when your body is out of alignment, your joints will wear unevenly. This is where visiting your chiropractor becomes very important. A chiropractor assesses alignment and help realign your joints safely and effectively.
