LIAM MELLOWS, the Republican Socialist and leader of the 1916 Rising in Galway - the county which saw the highest level of activity outside Dublin - will be commemorated at a series of events this month.
A series of events organised by East Galway Sinn Féin will take place in County Galway to mark the 94th anniversary of Liam Mellows’ execution on December 8 1922, during the Irish Civil War.
The first event will be the 1916-2016 Liam Mellows Commemorative Concert in the Lady Gregory Hotel, Gort, this Saturday from 8pm. The event will be addressed by Sinn Féin TD Kathleen Funchion and chaired by city councillor Mairéad Farrell. There will be talks and presentations from representatives of the Ballymurphy Massacre Families from Belfast; a 1981-2016 Hunger Strike Exhibition; music from members of the Éamonn Ceannt Quartet; and a concert by Tipperary-based band Rebel Hearts.
On Thursday December 8 at 7pm, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the 1916 Commemorative Garden in Athenry followed by a public discussion in the New Park Hotel, from 8pm on the topic of Liam Mellows in East Galway and his Relevance for Today. It will be addressed by NUI Galway historian Conor McNamara and journalist Eoin Ó Murchú. Admission is free and all are welcome.
"Liam Mellows was a revolutionary leader and an elected TD for Galway," said county councillor Gabe Cronnelly. "There is no doubt he had a huge impact on the people of east Galway, particularly in towns and villages such as Athenry, Craughwell, Killeeneen, Ardrahan, Clarinbridge and Claregalway."
