FATHER TED ran from 1995 to 1998 but more than a decade after both the show ended and the tragically early passing of the great Dermot Morgan, it still holds a vice like grip on the Irish psyche.
Is it ironic or apt that Father Ted has become almost a religion among so many Irish people? Either way Galway will get to celebrate Father Ted and enjoy some of the comedians who appeared on that legendary show with a series of events for Tedfest 09.
On Monday at 9pm, The Laughter Lounge at the Róisín Dubh and Tedfest 09 will present the Tedfest 09 Toilet Duck Award Grand Final.
The final will feature 10 of the best Irish up and coming stand up comedians including Derek Ryan, John Donnellan, James Marsh, Niamh Marrion, Paddy O’Shea, Padraic Fox, Giles Brody. and more. The MC will be the 2008 Toilet Duck Award winner Bob Hennigan.
On Tuesday, Massimo will host the TedFest table quiz which has a grand prize of four pairs of weekend passes to this year’s Tedfest.
The main event will be the Fr Ted Special in the Laughter Lounge on Wednesday at 9pm. Taking to the stage that night will be Patrick McDonnell, who played Eoin McLove in Father Ted, and Michael Redmond, who played the taciturn Fr Stone. The MC will be Kevin Gildea who played Fr Cave in the plane episode. There will also be a short set from the winner of The Toilet Duck Award 09 winner.
Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and Zhivago. Tedfest 09 takes place in the Aran Islands from Thursday March 5 to Sunday 8. For more information go to www.tedfest.org
