As Galway braces itself for another winter, a public meeting on climate change and its direct links to how the world economy functions, will be held on Monday November 21 at 8pm in Richardson’s, Eyre Square.
The talk, entitled What everyone needs to know about our environment and capitalism, will be given by NUI Galway professor of economics Terry McDonough, who will discuss these complex issues in layman’s terms.
Apart from people like US president-elect Donald Trump, many people no longer deny that climate change is a reality and that it poses an enormous threat to the world. Many hope science will invent a ‘silver bullet’ that will halt global warming and environmental disaster. However, one of the crucial problems Earth faces is that we live in a world where the economic buzzword is “growth”. This talk will examine if can we have infinite growth in a world that has finite resources.
The meeting is organised by the Connolly Forum. Admission is free and all are welcome.
