ADULTING, THE County Galway made short film, written and co-directed by Connemara's Linda Bhreathnach, has won the Best Short Film Award from Irish Film London. The award was presented at a ceremony in the Irish Embassy in London on Monday.
Written by Linda Bhreathnach and co-directed and co-produced with Justin Davey, Adulting premiered at this year's Galway Film Fleadh,, and has been acclaimed by BAFTA winner Ferdia Mac Anna as "quirky, insightful and unique", while The Irish Times called it "a poem of a film".
Adulting touches on the pressures engendered by contemporary social attitudes and social media - the pressure to travel, have the ‘perfect’ life and be ‘happy’. It examines the anxiety that vast amounts of choice can sometimes create. “I wanted to write something that was contemporary," said Linda, "and that represented modern Irish women in a way that felt realistic and authentic to me."
The film was shot in Galway city and Connemara. The cast includes Linda Bhreathnach (Ros na Rún, Corp agus Anam ), Carrie Crowley (Vikings, Fair City ), Paraic Breathnach (Jack Taylor, Breakfast on Pluto ), Emma Eliza Regan (Jack Taylor, Darkness on the Edge of Town ), Sean T Ó Meallaigh (Vikings, Klondike ), and James Riordan (Lipsinkers ). Cinematography is by Justin Davey, the director of photography is Lakshike Serasinhe.
Adulting will be screened at the Irish Film Festival London on Wednesday November 23 at 7pm in Regent Street Cinema, as part of the festival’s Best of Irish Short Films Programme. See www.irishfilmfestivallondon.com
