An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D. will this evening (Thursday ) turn the sod on a new €6m Cardiology Service at Bon Secours Hospital Galway and will welcome 20 new clinical jobs and employment in the construction of the facility.
Afterwards, Mr Kenny will speak at the hospital welcoming the new Cath Lab. The new unit will treat patients requiring procedures such as angiography, cardiac angioplasty and electrophysiology including the insertion of cardiac pacemakers.
The main feature of the development consists of a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory using the most up to date Siemens technology plus a 10-bay patient recovery area to accommodate those patients being discharged home on the same day.
This new development will significantly expand the range of services for patients choosing to attend Bon Secours Hospital in Galway as the development marks its entry into the significant area of Interventional Cardiology.
It also meets an urgent need for patients in the catchment area as there is a shortage of such facilities currently. Consultants in other specialties and their patients will also benefit greatly from the increased availability of Consultant Cardiologists in the hospital.
The Bon Secours Health System’s “2020 Plan” was launched recently at the Patients Partnerships & Planning Inaugural BSHS Conference. It outlines the Bon Secours Health System’s “2020 Plan” to develop services for patients and to continue to invest in Advanced Medicine Exceptional Care.
The “2020 Plan” outlines strategic goals and initiatives which will see a €150m capital investment across all hospitals in the Group, in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Tralee and the Care Village in Cork.
Galway will also see significant investment at its hospital site in Renmore.
The new laboratory will add to the existing complement of Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories available at Bon Secours Hospitals in the Cork, Dublin and Tralee Hospitals.
It is expected that the first patients will be treated at the Hospital in March 2017.
