Prison for man caught red-handed with stolen camera

A 20 years old man was sentenced to four months in prison at Galway District Court after Gardaí caught him red-handed with a camera which had been stolen hours earlier in a house break-in.

Sean McKevitt, no fixed abode, Cork city, pleaded guilty to handling a digital camera, knowing it was stolen, at Eyre Square, Galway, on August 15 last year. He is currently serving a sentence in Cork for burglaries and theft in that jurisdiction.

Inspector Pat McHugh told the local court last week that Garda Noelle Kilduff received a report of people drinking and causing a disturbance in Eyre Square on August 15 last year and she went to the area and directed a number of youths to leave the area.

She noticed McKevitt who was intoxicated was acting suspiciously and she took a camera, which he had been holding in his hand, from him.

It was subsequently discovered that the camera had been taken a short time earlier during the burglary of a house in the city.

McKevitt told Gardai he knew nothing about the burglary but had swopped a bottle of wine for the camera when approached by a Traveller in Eyre Square.

Judge Mary Fahy sentenced McKevitt to four months in prison, to be served consecutively to the sentences he is currently serving in Cork.
