Castlebar Mitchels march into Connacht club championship

Beaten All-Ireland finalists last March and current Connacht club senior champions Castlebar Mitchels easily recaptured the Mayo senior county title last weekend on a score-line of 3-13 to 0-10 over an outclassed Knockmore at McHale Park.

It is the first time since 1970 that the Castlebar club have put Mayo senior titles back to back. Their win was built on the back of a superb display by county star Paddy Durcan who notched 1-3 from wing-back and full-forward Neil Douglas who scored 1-6 (4fs ).

The Mitchels are very powerful down the middle of the team with players like full-back Ger McDonagh, Eoghan O’ Reilly at number six, and midfielders Barry Moran and Aiden Walsh all big strong men.

The Mayo champions take on Tourlestrane (Sligo ) this Saturday in Markievicz Park (2pm ) and the winners will face Galway county champions, Corofin, on Sunday week - November 13.

If Castlebar win this Saturday, the Connacht semi-final will be at McHale Park, alternatively if the Sligo men are victorious, the game will be at a Galway venue.
