Design Galway 2016 will feature Re: Design Talks which will feature conversations with leading design practitioners on an innovative aspect of their practice. Topics range from traditional and contemporary methodologies within the Irish textile industry, a close look into the inspiration behind Galway’s internationally acclaimed Macnas, documenting street art culture around the world and finally exploring the cross-section between screen printing and activism.
Diarmuid Commins from S Twist Wool, a new Irish hand spinning company, will speak about the wool process, in conversation with Anne O’Maille hailed as the “Guardian of Aran Knitting” by the Irish Times. A unique conversation on the traditional versus contemporary approaches to the Irish wool industry.
Noeline Kavanagh, Artistic Director of Macnas speaks about the about the importance of design in both performance and spectacle. The talk will explore the vital role which design holds within the Macnas creative team in bringing their show-stopping events from concept to high-energy word-class spectacle.
Aida Wilde, London-based artist and activist will speak about her process. Aida’s artistic career is diverse and ranges from screen printing to lecturing and hand printing. For the past 9 years, Aida has been focusing on producing a range of fine art screen prints, as well as various slogans and iconography “pop” themed artwork.
Mark Rigney is an Irish-born designer, blogger, photographer and art zine maker currently working and living in East London. He is founder and editor one of the leading UK Street Art websites. He will speak about documenting some of the most iconic and ephemeral art on streets all around the world.
