Galway Pro-Choice memorial for Savita Halappanavar

The fourth anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar will be marked in Galway city tomorrow with a memorial event orgainsed by Galway Pro-Choice.

Our Darkest Hour Comes Just Before the Dawn: Memorial for Savita Halappanavar will begin at 6pm. The public is invited to attend and to assemble at the Spanish Arch. There will be a candlelit procession to the Market Square where a vigil, featuring music and poetry from local writer Elaine Feeney, will take place.

“What happened to this young, vibrant woman in Galway four years ago should not be forgotten,” said Jenni Owen-Thomas of Galway Pro-Choice. “We will stand together to show our respect and solidarity with Savita’s family and friends, and with everyone affected by her tragic death.”

Suzi Coombs of Galway Pro-Choice said “little has changed” for women, while women’s rights are still affected by Ireland’s “restrictive laws”. She said a “society that trusts and respects women, at every level, and in every way”, must be created.
