The Galway Indian Community will hold its annual Diwali celebration, to mark the Indian festival of lights, at the Presentation Primary School Hall, on Saturday November 5 at 5 pm.
The celebration is centred on the flame of the diya, or lamp, to remind that light ultimately triumphs over darkness. This is the 10th year the GIC has celebrated the event in this way, and, as ever, it will be a chance for the community to share its traditions and culture, with Galway people.
This year’s event will begin with a few moments of quiet contemplation for Lakshmi Puja. The lamps will be lit to commemorate the moment when darkness was banished by light. This will be followed by creative children’s performances, Bollywood music, and dancing. Traditional Indian savoury and sweet specialties will be served.
Galway Indian Community was established in 2006. The community volunteers run dancing and drama classes for children, and organise family-friendly events to mark significant Indian festivals.
The public is invited to join in the celebration of Diwali. To buy tickets contact 087 - 2297600 or 085 - 1045291.
