HUNT FOR The Wilderpeople, the New Zealand adventure comedy-drama, starring Sam Neill and Julian Dennison, as a father figure and son who become caught in a manhunt, will be screened at the 22nd Junior Galway Film Fleadh.
The fleadh runs from Wednesday November 9 to Saturday 12, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (12 ) will be screened on the Saturday. An unlikely buddy-comedy/coming-of-age drama from director Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok ) set in the wilds of New Zealand, it won the audience award for Best International Feature Film at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.
Ireland’s youngest filmmakers will showcase their work as part of the Future Filmmakers shorts programmes while filmmaking workshops will help young people explore special effects, screenwriting, storyboarding (with the Oscar-nominated Brown Bag Films ), making a film on a phone, and an introduction to VR film.
The JGFF will also present its Outreach titles, taking cinema into the classroom. These include German film The Pasta Detectives (ages 12 to 14 ) and Irish language film, Eipic (16+ ), a contemporary drama about a group of young people forming a band to the backdrop of the 1916 Rising centenary. To mark Social Inclusion Week, the festival will present a free screening of Life, Animated, the true story of how a young boy overcame the challenges of autism through Disney’s animated films.
Each year the JGFF selects several titles that complement school language curricula. The French title this year is Ma Revolution (15+ ), a vibrant and colourful coming of age comedy set in Paris; German film About A Girl (15+ ) is a thought provoking examination of teen suicide; The Olive Tree (15+ ) meanwhile deals with family roots in contemporary Spain. The Gearrscannáin programme features shorts aimed at students studying Irish for Junior Cert 2017. Study notes will be provided after each screening.
