Several communities in east Galway have been told to boil their water this week due to a deterioration in water quality caused by heavy rainfall.
Irish Water and the Galway County Council issued a boil notice on Tuesday evening, on foot of advice from the HSE, for communities served by the Mid Galway Public Water Supply Scheme.
The affected areas include Monivea, Abbeyknockmoy, Kiltullagh, Gurteen, Colmanstown, and east Athenry. Athenry town is not affected by the notice.
It is understood that persistent heavy rainfall over the past number of days has caused an increase in the turbidity, or concentration of suspended solids, in the water source which supplies the scheme. As a result the plant is currently unable to produce fully compliant water. A spokesperson for Irish Water said it was monitoring water quality in the area continuously.
“Irish Water and Galway County Council are working continuously to ensure a safe and compliant supply of water is returned to consumers as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement. “Irish Water and Galway County Council wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this announcement.”
Householders are being advised to boil water used for drinking, water based drinks, preparation of salads and other raw foods, teeth brushing, and ice making. People are also advised to discard ice cubes and filtered water.
