Galway fighter takes on world champ for Irish crown

Galway's Irish K-1 champion and 2015 World K-1 gold medallist, Cian McCormack, will feature in the main kickboxing event at the Clayton Hotel on Sunday.

The Kinvara fighter from the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Gym will take on WAKO world tournament kickboxing champion Niall Carroll from Kildare for the IKF All Ireland light welterweight kickboxing crown.

Promoter Pete Foley from the Galway club says this fight is one of the "biggest and most prestigious domestic dust ups in recent years" with both fighters the best at their weight class in the country.

The event will also feature three more Irish title fights. Galway's Gary Elbert will challenge current All Ireland welterweight K-1 champ Gherado Frusci from Carlow for his belt, and Galway's Paul Mc Donagh will take on Connell Wall from Waterford for the vacant junior super welterweight title.

Thurles fighter Alice Mahoney will make a mandatory first defence of her Irish flyweight kickboxing title to Chloe Quinn in an all-Tipperary affair, and Galway Black Dragon James Kelly and Whitney Huish will take on top international opposition from North France under K-1 rules.

The undercard will feature 12 more Black Dragon fighters.

The doors open at 4pm with the first fight scheduled for 4.30pm and tickets are on sale now with a limited amount available at the door on the day.
