A flood relief scheme for Gort and the south Galway lowlands is in the works with the Office Of Public Works confirming funding is available for the works.
The application followed a meeting between the Minister of State for OPW and Flood Relief, Seán Canney; the chief executive of the county council, Kevin Kelly; and council director of services, Liam Gavin. The funding was approved by Minister Canney and it will include provision for a full time project engineer to manage the works. An agreement has also been reached with the Environment Minister, Denis Naughton, to employ the Geological Survey of Ireland, Trinity College, and NUIG experts to examine turloughs in the area.
“It is important every effort is made to ensure we put in place a full scheme to deal with the difficulties that have been experienced in the area,” said Minister Canney. “This is the first step in achieving peace of mind for people who have suffered from severe flooding in 2009 and 2015.”
