DOROTHY PARKER was famed for her wit, which could be as brilliant as it was nasty, but it is often forgotten that she was a civil rights activist, a supporter of Martin Luther King, and chronicler of the Spanish Civil War.
All these aspects of her career have been brought together by Honor Heffernan, one of Ireland's finest jazz singers, and composer/keyboardist Trevor Knight, in their new cabaret/speakeasy-style show The Whistling Girl, which they will perform at the Clifden Arts Festival.
Expect to encounter an evening with a darkly sardonic and theatrical atmosphere in which Parker’s droll and sometimes heart-rending lyrics are transported into the 21st century by way of a soundtrack of ‘dirty’-cabaret, electronic-vaudeville, rock, and jazz. Parker’s support for Martin Luther King, and writings about her experiences in Spain during the Spanish Civil War also form an integral part of the show.
