FOR ANY comedian trying to make his/her way in the world, it is important to put something on the poster after his/her name other than ‘Mammy thinks I’m funny’. that is why there is now the Irish Comedian of the Year competition.
The competitions which make audiences and promoters sit up and take notice are usually held outside Ireland, so the advent of the Irish Comedian of the Year is important. The competition is coming to this year’s Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway and heats are being held in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, and London.
However, over the next two Fridays, the Róisín Dubh Comedy Clubh is handing over its regular Friday night to the West of Ireland Heats of Irish Comedian of the Year. Admission will still be €8 in advance/€10 at door. Then on September 30, the Comedy Clubh moves downstairs to the main room for the semi-final.
When the Comedy Carnival rolls into town, more than 200 acts will have been whittled down to 10 very funny folk. These magnificent specimens of comedic genius will appear in the grand final in the Town Hall Theatre on Thursday October 27, with MC, Andrew Stanley.
The winner will receive €2,000 as well as flights to Australia and a working tour of Australian comedy festivals. For the winner it will be absolute proof that mammy was right.
