If you love singing and would like an exciting new challenge, the Galway Choral Association wants to hear from you.
The Association is a 60-member community-based choir and has vacancies in all sections for men and women who share a commitment to working together to make great choral music accessible to all.
Recently the choir has started preparation for a joint concert with the multi-award-winning Cantorion Gogledd Cymru (formerly Cantorion Colin Jones ), one of the best male voice choirs in Wales, to be held in the Town Hall Theatre on December 17 2016. Titled A Celtic Choral Celebration, this concert will feature a feast of seasonal choral music from both sides of the Irish Sea.
“Performing in this venue is a new venture for the choir,” said musical director, Norman Duffy. “Galway Choral members are looking forward to the satisfaction and challenge of rehearsing and performing works including a song cycle by Charles V. Stanford, based on traditional Irish melodies with lyrics by Thomas Moore, with a few favourites thrown in for good measure.
As well as the major concerts in December and May, the choir supports Galway city and county charity events and will be working on repertoire for these occasions alongside their twice-yearly concerts.
The choir rehearses on Sunday from 7.30 - 9.30 pm in St. Patrick’s Band Hall beside Galway Railway Station, and Norman promises that each evening will be an enjoyable experience for all. The choir season is from September to June each year, and members are asked to commit for a year at a time. Prospective members may attend up to three rehearsals before deciding if they would like to join.
“Galway Choral Association is a community-based choir with members of all ages and differing levels of experience. We are a friendly welcoming choir and we would love to hear from anyone who has an interest in choral singing,” says Carol Duffy, Chairperson of Galway Choral Association. “Ability to read music, while an advantage, is definitely not necessary. Professional help and various learning-tools are accessible and, with work and dedication, anything is possible”.
