Online petition gathering momentum to save Kinvara green

An online petition to reinstate the green at Kinvara Pier has already attracted more than 700 signatures after the green was removed to facilitate the installation of holding tanks for a new sewage treatment facility.

The space the green used to occupy has been temporarily tarred over and is now being used as a car park for coaches.

Spokesperson for Save Kinvara Green, Maeve Kelly, said the removal of the green and the lack of information about its future is causing distress to local residents.

"The green is the living centre of the village and there are people living on that quay who are very distressed. They are looking at five or six coaches out of their windows. There is certainly a big increase in traffic.

"People are really stressed and most is stemming from confusion. The Galway County Council have been forthcoming with information, but it seems contradictory to what has been presented to us by the local county councillor.

"One group of people is telling us that it is getting reinstated and another group of people is informing us that it will be used as a car park. Nobody seems to have an adequate answer for us."

Kelly said residents have been informed that the current layout is apparently to allow for settlement of ground after the works that have been done to date, and it could be left for up to nine months in its current state.

Kelly spoke about the importance of the green to the people of the area.

"The green is a core part of the community in Kinvara. When we are having our festivals such as Cruinniu na mBad or RNLI day, it is where all the activities are based from, and when the weather is nice people will be down. All the boat users will avail of it, families can use it to sit and have picnics. We have very little green area in the village as it is and it is a core amenity for us.

"We have over 700 signatures for the Facebook petition and there are paper petitions in the local shops and those pages are filling up quickly. I believe it is representative of how people in the village feel about the removal of the green."

Galway County Council was unable to be contacted to provide comment on the situation.
