Reggae legend Jah Shaka to play Galway

First Galway concert from Shaka in more than a decade

JAH SHAKA, the legendary reggae artist whose music inspired such post-punks giants as Public Image Ltd and The Slits, plays the Commercial Boatclub, Woodquay, this Saturday at 8pm.

Shaka, who last played Galway in 2003, started out on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System as an operator, before setting up his own sound system. By the late 197os Shaka's system had gained a large and loyal following due to the combination of spiritual content, high energy rhythms, massive sonority, and his dynamic personal style.

In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon. Throughout the rest of that decade he remained true to his spiritual and distinct musical style during the 1980s when many others sound systems were tending towards dancehall music. Shaka's Sound System appears regularly in London, and tours of the USA, Europe, and Japan.

Support is from Rootical Sound System, featuring Cian Finn. Admission is €20.
