Permission for flood relief works in east Galway

Three projects to alleviate flooding in Kinvara, Monivea, and Tuam, will be granted approval this week by the Office of Public Works, allowing the Galway County Council to proceed with the measures.

A grant of €76,000 has been allocated for a culvert upgrade, channel improvements, and environmental reports in the Kinvara area; €11,700 has been allocated to clean and maintain sections of an open channel at Parkacurry, Monivea, as well as the installation of drainage pipes and gullies and the creation of two new headwalls and trash screens; while €14,220 has been allocated to extend a pipe across the N83 at Beagh, Tuam.

The grants have been welcomed by the Independent Alliance Galway East TD, and Minister of State for OPW and Flood Relief, Seán Canney.

“Minor works projects such as these three are key in terms of dealing with localised flooding problems,” he said. “While large scale drainage projects have to be undertaken across County Galway, targeted minor works can alleviate flooding flashpoints and allow better outflow of water following flash flooding episodes.”
