SOUL, JAZZ, Afro, Latin, and Caribbean styles, biting social commentary and a core message of hope, will come together in the music of French-Canadian collective The Souljazz Orchestra.
The Souljazz Orchestra will play the Róisín Dubh this Saturday at 8pm as part of the Galway International Arts Festival. The band has released six albums since 2008, with the most recent being last year's Resistance.
Speaking about that album and the band's music, songwriter, keyboardist, and vocalist Pierre Chrétien said: "We were keen to build on the band's sound and message, so I brought in some of the French Caribbean and Francophone West African influences that I've loved since my youth."
The band have shared bills with Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, and Femi Kuti, been nominated for multiple Juno awards in Canada, while their live shows have been hailed as "ecstatic, sweat-soaked, cathartic affairs, mixing pulsating arrangements with eruptive improvisations". As saxophonist Ray Murray said: "When you're this passionate about music, it's not something you can turn on or off like a tap. Souljazz is more than just a band for us, it's a way of life."
