#WearitShareit for Galway 2020

With less than a week left in Galway’s final bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2020, Galway’s business community has rallied to launch a new #WearitShareit campaign.

The object is to get as many people in the city to wear a new wristband to show support for the bid.

Blue wristbands with the Galway 2020 message will be available free of charge from key hubs throughout the city. Every man, woman and child is asked to wear the Galway 2020 wristband in support of the bid.

People are asked to take a selfie while wearing the wristband and share it on social media using the hashtags #WearitShareit and #Galway2020. This will create a massive online surge showing how the people of Galway want to win the bid more than its two rival finalistsW, Limerick and Waterford/Kilkenny/Wexford (known as The Three Sisters ).

The panel of European judges is visiting Galway on Sunday and Monday, and they will be taking to the streets to assess just how much the people of Galway want and need the European Capital of Culture designation.

Organisers believe the simple action of everyone wearing the wristband on these two days and understanding what Galway 2020 means for the city and county may have a massive impact on the overall decision.

A huge economic impact is expected if Galway is successful in its bid. Organisers project more than four million extra visitors in the next 10 years - an average of 400,000 per year or a 35 per cent increase per annum. It is anticipated up to 5,000 jobs will be created as a result in the tourism and hospitality industry, in addition to normal growth projections.

Anyone who wants to pick up wristbands can collect them from the Galway 2020 office at Unit 15 The Cornstore, Middle Street, Galway city. The wristbands will also be available from: The Town Hall Theatre, Blake’s Corner Bar, An Pucan, The Skeff Bar, Corrib Shopping Centre, McCambridges, OMG (formerly Zhivago ), Easons, Eyre Square Shopping Centre, Biteclub, The Front Door Pub, The King's Head, The Dail Bar, Seven Bar, Monroes Tavern, Massimo Bar, Oslo Bar Salthill, Centra Salthill, IMC Cinema, Galway Shopping Centre, Dunnes Stores Knocknacarra, Joyces Knocknacarra and Tom Sheridan’s Knocknacarra.
