New film written and directed by Graham Cantwell to be screened in Town Hall Theatre

LILY IS a teenager trying to negotiate the difficulties of school life, but she also has a secret, and when a misunderstanding with the beautiful and popular Violet leads to a vicious attack, she must confront the secret head on.

This is Lily, a new LGBT drama written and directed by Graham Cantwell, which will have its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh as part of the Irish Shorts 4 programme on Friday July 8 from 12 noon in the Town Hall Theatre.

The film stars Gaiety graduate Clara Harte and introduces Dean Quinn in the leading roles of Lily and Simon. Amy-Joyce Hastings (The Callback Queen ), Paul Ronan (Veronica Guerin ), Aisling O’Neill (Fair City ), and Lynette Callaghan (The Yank ), Leah McNamara, and Hallie Ridgeway also star.

Writer and director Graham Cantwell is known for directing feature film Anton, nominated for three Irish Film and Television Awards in 2009; His 2004 directorial debut A Dublin Story was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination; in 2014 he co-authored the screenplay for Poison Pen with Eoin Colfer; and he wrote and directed romantic comedy The Callback Queen, nominated for two IFTAs at the 2016 Awards.

“This film is really important to me, dealing as it does with the very sensitive issue of bullying," Cantwell has said. "Some of our especially vulnerable young people are members of the LGBT community, and I’m very grateful to the BeLonG To organisation for their advice and support while writing the script.”

The score was created by two time Emmy nominated composer Joseph Conlan, and also features music by JD Kelleher, Peter M Smith and Hello Monroe. Lily was executive produced by Filmbase and Film Venture, and shot in several locations in Dublin.
