A rare musical treat Polar Voices – From the Arctic to the Atlantic will be held in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Wednesday next June 22 at 8pm.
The event will be held in aid of Console the national suicide charity and should not be missed.
Polar Voices – From the Arctic to the Atlantic presents the music of the Russian Arctic’s indigenous people in film and describes in readings from diaries, written during the field trips of ‘’Polar Voices’’, life among the nomads and the Small Nations of the Russian Arctic. The Finnish violinist, Pia Siirala will perform her composition for solo violin on indigenous themes “Ulita’s Walk”.
The Irish conductor, Lygia O’Riordan co-founded Ensemble XXI with the Finnish violinist Pia Siirala during their studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Recently Ensemble XXI has relocated to the EU, to Finland and will hold residencies in a number of EU countries. As Lygia O’Riordan’s Irish home is in Galway, she aims to create a residency in Galway as, unlike other Irish cities, it does not have a professional orchestra.
Lygia O’Riordan has chosen to repeat this Galway concert in order to support CONSOLE, the National Suicide Charity. She explains the reason: ‘Everyone who lives in Galway is aware of the tragedy of suicide, whether it is watching or hearing the hovering helicopter or through the heartbreaking stories of friends who have been touched by this. Suicide has now reached very high levels in Galway and everyone who lives in Galway has a responsibility to react in any way that they can. I hope that the proceeds from our concert will contribute to the funds that CONSOLE so desperately needs to carry out their invaluable and tireless work.’
Tickets: €15 and €10. For further information contact: Margaret on 087 9500380 www.console.ie/counties/galway or www.ensemblexxi.org/links htm
