One hundred new jobs are to be created over the next five years in Ballinasloe by life sciences technologies company Surmodics, which plans to invest more than €7 million in its County Galway facility.
The company, which is headquartered in Minnesota, also plans to invest a further €9.5 million in two significant research and development projects in its new Galway facility, which is located at the 30,000sq ft Creagh Medical facility in Ballinasloe, which Surmodics acquired in November 2015.
The announcement of the new jobs was made by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, this morning. "The expansion of the newly acquired facility in Ballinasloe is very welcome news and a vote of confidence in the skilled Irish workforce," she said, "and 100 jobs for Galway is great news."
Surmodics operates in two areas of the Lifesciences industry - medical devices and in vitro diagnostics. Tom Greaney, previously CEO of Creagh Medical has joined Surmodics as VP of global operations and general manager of the Ballinasloe operation.
CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan described the announcement as "great news for Ballinasloe and for the region". He added that the facility's location between Galway and Athlone "and their respective Medtech clusters and third level institutes will act as an excellent regional reference seller to other potential investors".
