rotests will be held in Galway, in solidarity with protests in Clare and Dublin, against the visit to Ireland later this month of the highly controversial presumptive Republic US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The protest, entitled the Dump Trump Solidarity Demo and organised by The Socialist Party Galway, takes place on Saturday June 18 at 2pm, starting at the Spanish Arch.
The organisers say the protest is to “show opposition” to Trump’s stance on women, Muslims, and immigrants, and how the tycoon “symbolises everything that is wrong with capitalism”. In a statement the Socialist Party said: “We need to build a real mass alternative that focuses on fairness, equality, and solidarity amongst the 99 per cent, and among working people of all races, religions, or nationalities”.
Meanwhile another event, entitled Trump - Not Welcome Here!, organised by the People Before Profit Alliance, takes place in The Western Hotel, Prospect Hill, on Thursday June 16 at 7.30pm.
The protests in Dublin and Clare take place the following week. Mr Trump is due to arrive at Shannon Airport on June 23 and visit his Doonbeg golf resort in Clare before leaving on June 25, although his itinerary has not been confirmed. It is also understood the Government has no plans to formally meet Mr Trump during his Irish visit, but Mr Trump’s staff have not ruled out his potentially meeting An Taoiseach Enda Kenny during that time.
