Fifty street parties to take place across city and county next weekend

Street Feast has confirmed that more than 850 street feast parties will take place on the weekend of June 12, with some 50 parties being organised in Galway.

The organisation, in partnership with the 1916 / 2016 Centenary celebrations, is using the initiative as a means of creating communities, encouraging people to get involved, and reducing the feeling of isolation in rural areas.

“We were delighted that Street Feast was included as part of the State’s special centenary celebrations and we hope that in some small way, a street feast will bring communities together and reduce isolation,” said Sam Bishop, co-founder of Street Feast.

“We want Street Feast to act as a spark to help rejuvenate communities, welcome old and new faces, bring generations together, share stories and skills, and make our streets safer places to be.”

In Galway, street parties will be held across the county with locations including Ardrahan, Ballinderreen, Claregalway, Clifden, Gort, Knocknacarra, Oranmore, and the city centre.

The initiative invites an individual, a group of neighbours, or club, to host a food party, and eat lunch on their street, local park, and even front garden.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a food item with them, providing it tastes good, and take part in the celebrations.

“The bookings are coming in fast and the feedback has been tremendous, with some streets even getting dressed up to mark the commemorations,” said Bishop.

“We would encourage as many individuals, friends, neighbours, clubs, community groups, and resident associations to get involved in this special all-inclusive community initiative.”

Street Feast is a not-for-profit, all-for-fun, do-it-yourself celebration, and will take place across the country on June 12.

Registration is available at www.streetfeast.ie, and all hosting parties will receive a free party pack. The pack will include a guide to help make your feast a success, as well as posters, invitations, balloons, party hats, and bunting to get the party started
