ConTempo to perform Beethoven and Bartok

Two concerts from the acclaimed, Galway based, Romanian quartet

CONTEMPO WILL perform music by Beethoven and Bartok at two concerts over the coming week, ahead of the quartet being presented with honorary degrees by NUI Galway later this month.

ConTempo will play Beethoven's String Quartets No 6 Op 18 and No 14 Op 131 in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Saturday June 4 at 7.30pm, in the concluding installment of its ‘Experience Beethoven’ series. The concert will be introduced by Lyric FM's Eamonn Lawlor.

"Only now have I learnt how to write quartets properly," Beethoven wrote upon completing his String Quartet No 6 Op 18, while the No 14 moved composer Robert Schuman to say “it stand(s )...on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination.”

ConTempo will also give a lunchtime concert in St Nicholas' on Tuesday June 7 at 1.10pm, performing Bartók's String Quartet No 2 in Am, Op 17. Written between 1915 and 1917, and first published in 1920, it is a work overshadowed by WWI.

Tickets for the Beethoven concert are €15/12/10, from Opus II, High Street, Galway, or on the door. The lunchtime Bartok concert is free.
