Official statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show new car registrations for the month of April were up 10 per cent.
Some 10,408 new cars were registered compared to 9,451 in April 2015, while new cars registrations year to date are up 26 per cent on the same period last year.
To date 93,240 have been registered this year (to April 30 ) compared to 73,970 in the first four months of last year.
Light commercial vehicles show an 11 per cent increase in new registrations in April - that is 2,311 LCVs sold in April 2016, an increase from 2,078 registered on April 2015. For the year to date, 15,730 LCVs have been registered, which is up 29 per cent on the first four months of last year.
Heavy Commercial Vehicles are also up 38 per cent for the month of April - that is 315 new HCVs registered compared to the same month last year, when 228 were registered. And for the year to date, registrations are up 57 per cent on last year, with 1,380 new HCVs registered in the first four months of 2016
Commenting on the figures, SIMI director general, Alan Nolan said vehicle registrations were an accurate barometer of the progress of the economy.
"New car statistics reflect the position of consumers, while business activity and confidence can be seen in the commercial vehicle sales. Registrations from the different sectors continue to perform well, as we progress towards more normal levels of sales for our industry.
"The two registration plate system has produced two very strong sales peaks in the first and third quarters of the year. As we move closer towards the second registration period, we would expect to see sales taper off somewhat, but there are still very strong offers and many deals still to be done.”
