LED lights are to be installed throughout all of Shantalla, by the Galway City Council, with the works expecting to begin in June. The development has been welcomed by Sinn Féin city councillor Anna Marley.
Such lighting was installed along Newcastle Road, Costello Road, Ash Road, and Shantalla Rd early last year but plans are now afoot to roll out the scheme across the area. The installation of LED lighting was requested by local residents.
LED bulbs are brighter than traditional street lights and it is believed, that because of this, they help curb anti-social behaviour and crime, a point that was raised at the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting in City Hall.
Cllr Marley said the development was "positive for the local community" and was also "beneficial to the environment" in that it lowers energy costs and reduces consumption. While she admitted the installation of the lights will "be a significant cost initially, the long term benefits greatly outweigh this."
