School choirs from all over Ireland to sing in SCCUL schools choral competition

School choirs from all over Ireland will perform in the SCCUL Schools Choral Competition on Friday May 6. The competition which is hosted by GMIT will see choirs from Dublin, Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and Galway compete at Primary and Post- Primary level.

A stellar judging panel has been assembled to judge what is Galway’s first ever schools choral competition. The panel comprises Dr. Brendan O’ Connor, Director Cois Cladaigh (Chairman ), Ms. Bernie Sherlock, Founder and Director New Dublin Voices and Donal Doherty, Director Codetta & founder Derry International Choral Festival. A specially commissioned trophy by Galway based sculptor Liam Butler will be presented to the winners of each competition.

According to Michael Smyth, General Manager SCCUL Enterprises, the competition has attracted an unprecedented number of entries from schools. “We are delighted with the interest we have received from schools at both primary and post-primary level. Dr. Fergal Barry, President GMIT said that GMIT was very pleased to be able to host the event. “Choral singing is hugely beneficial to the development of children and young people. I am hoping the competition will celebrate the ethos of teamwork and group activity promoted in school choirs and look forward to welcoming up to 1000 young singers to GMIT,” concluded Dr. Barry. Masters of ceremonies for the day are Galway bay fm’s Ollie Turner and Amy Kelly, President GMIT Student’s Union. Members of the public are invited to attend the competitions which take place in GMIT. The Primary Schools competition commences at 10am, Post -Primary Equal voices at 11.30pm and Post- Primary Mixed Voice at 2pm.
