1916 leader Éamonn Ceannt to be honoured in Galway

Éamonn Ceannt, the Galwayman who was a signatory to the 1916 Proclamation will be honored at a special ceremony in the city this weekend, in what the organisers hope will become a yearly event.

The First Annual Éamonn Ceannt Commemoration takes place on Easter Monda (March 28 ) at 12 noon at the Ceannt Station main entrance, under the Ceannt plaque. The key note address will be given by Damien J Quinn, grandson of Joseph Quinn, originally from Tuam, who was a member of the C Company 4th Battalion Dublin Brigade, during Easter Week and under the command of Éamonn Ceannt.

Ceannt’s last statement will be read as will the Galway roll of honour of 1916 participants. This will be followed by the laying of a wreath and a minute’s silence. The event will conclude with music from a piper. Ceannt himself was an award winning ullieann piper.
