Participants being sought to sign up for charity firewalk to remember Annaghdown man killed in Australia

BY CAROLINE WHELAN

The sister of an Annaghdown native, who was tragically killed in Australia last year, will take part in an innovative charity event in his honour next month.

Gerard Scully of Woodpark, Annaghdown, lost his life in a road crash in Australia in November 2015. Mr Scully’s body was brought home with the assistance of The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, which aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances. The trust was set up following the tragic death of Kevin Bell in America in 2013.

Marie Scully decided she wanted to assist other families who may unfortunately find themselves needing to bring the bodies of deceased loved one’s home, and will undergo a charity firewalk at Galwegians Rugby Club next month, with all proceeds in aid of the trust. She is calling on others to sign up to this once in a lifetime event. Full training is provided and according to those who have walked the walk it is an amazing experience. “Walking on fire is said to be an incredible experience, something many people have on their bucket list. The firewalk is being presented by Brian Moore, Ireland’s only master firewalking instructor. Each participant is asked to pay a €30 sign-up fee and to attempt to raise €150 in sponsorship.”

Well known local business owner Gill Carroll of 37 West and 56 Central, has undergone the challenge. She said it was an unbelievable experience. “This was one of the most enlightening things I’ve done in my life! If you want to unleash something or let go of any blockages this will help! Brian is an unbelievable coach he will prepare your mind to achieve anything. I can’t describe it in text - you gotta go do it!”
