Galway WFC look to extend lead over Shels

Galway Women’s FC are looking to protect their lead at the top of the Continental Tyres WNL when they head to Dublin to take on Shelbourne in Morton Stadium on Saturday (7pm ).

Manager Don O'Riordan is expecting a tight game against the Dublin outfit, which with a game in hand and unbeaten, is close on Galway's tail in second place.

However Galway will travel to the capital with confidence in a bid to maintain their excellent recent run of results, the latest on Saturday evening in Eamonn Deacy Park being a 3-0 victory over newcomers Kilkenny United.

Galway took the lead after 20 minutes when Jess Nolan spread the ball wide to Sorcha Ní Bhraonáin who hit a wonder strike from the corner of the penalty area.

Five minutes later Elle O’Flaherty went close when her shot came back off the crossbar, and just before half time it was the same result for Keara Cormican, this time from a header, as Galway went in at the break just one goal to the good.

Three minutes into the second half keeper Tina Hughes came to Galway’s rescue when she pulled off an excellent save from the head of Ali O’Keeffe. However Lynsey McKey put Galway 2-0 up on 59 minutes after Méabh De Búrca robbed the ball on the half way line and powered into the Kilkenny half before slotting in McKey who finished from a tight angle.

O’Flaherty added to her recent collection of goals when finishing on the 87th minute. McKey crossed from the left to find Nolan who flicked over Kilkenny substitute keeper Siobhan Grant Mourhead, only to see her attempt cleared off the line by Olivia Nolan. However O’Flaherty followed up, getting the ball over the line despite Nolan's best attempts.
