New anti-racism group to be launched in the city

A new group, the Galway Anti Racism Network, is organising a number of events over the coming weeks to promote its official launch, which will take place early next month.

On Tuesday March 15, GARN will host a table quiz in Monroe's at 8pm. Tables are €20 and all funds raised will go towards materials and catering for the launch. Prizes are being sought from local businesses. Those who wish to donate can do so via [email protected].

On Saturday March 19, in coordination with the European Network Against Racism, GARN will partake in a street event on Eyre Square to advertise the Love Not Hate campaign, which is calling for proper hate crime legislation to protect minorities in Ireland. Community groups are invited to take part.

No date or venue has been set for the launch but it will take place at the beginning of next month. Invites are currently being sent to representatives from the local Muslim community, asylum seeker advocacy campaigns, the Galway Traveller Movement, African drivers in the taxi industry, representatives from the local Roma community, and other migrant worker groups. The event will be catered with food from various minority ethnic communities around Galway and transport will be organised to help attendees get to the event. Those interested in contacting the group should call Joe Loughnane on 087 - 2729021.
