Two men charged with stealing nearly €2,000 from bookies

Two men who robbed nearly €2,000 from punters at a number of bookies were brought before Galway District Court last Monday.

Kenneth Bowden (26 ) of Rathnafishogue, Hacketstown, Carlow, and Graham Coughlan (21 ) of Tang, Ballymahon, Westmeath, who were both living at Kilcornan Clarenbridge, Galway, were arrested on February 6, 2009, and charged with a number of alleged robberies from a person.

They are charged with robbing Annette Hoare of €1,700 cash at Su2 Sports Bookmakers, Main Street, Craughwell, Galway on January 31, 2009; robbing Donnie Farragher of €30 cash at Oran Sports Bookmakers, Main Street, Oranmore, on January 31, 2009; and robbing Mark Clyne of €200 cash at Pyramid Bookmakers, Summerfield, Claregalway on February 2, 2009.

In the case of Bowden, Inspector Ernie White made an application for him to be remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear again at Harristown District Court on February 13. Bail was granted on his own bond of €1,000 and independent surety of €1,000, one half to be lodged. He was also ordered to sign on at Oranmore Garda Station on Mondays and Fridays between 9am and 9pm, and be of good behaviour.

Coughlan was granted bail on the same terms. He managed to secure independent surety and was remanded on continuing bail to appear in court again on February 23 for DPP directions.
