TOMORROW IS International Women's Day, and in advance of the date, Amnesty Galway will screen Marzia, My Friend, winner of the Human Rights award at the 2016 Galway Film Fleadh, this evening.
Marzia, My Friend is the story of an Afghan journalist in her twenties who has dreams of love, independence, and freedom, but because she lives in Afghanistan, those dreams are revolutionary. Marzia’s story becomes a symbol of the wider struggle of Afghan women: the right to make decisions about their own lives. The film follows Marzia’s life from spring 2011 to the end of 2014, when international troops were supposed to leave Afghanistan.
The film was directed by Finnish film maker Kirsi Mattilah and produced by Elina Pohjola, Piia Nokelainen. The film has won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the Montreal World Film Festival 2015 and Best Afghan Documentary at FF Stocckholm 2015.
Marzia, My Friend will be screening this evening [Monday March 7] at 7.30pm in Room IT125G, ground floor in the IT building, at NUI Galway. Viewers are asked to go to Smokey's café at the end of the university's main concourse and Amnesty people will direct from there. All are welcome.
