St Joseph’s Community Centre in Shantalla, Galway will provide the venue for a Dog Adoption Day this Sunday, 6 March, from 11 - 2 pm.
The event is being organised by the dog rescue group MADRA.
The charity currently has over one-hundred dogs looking for new homes due to the continued growth in the number of stray and surrender dogs coming into their care, and MADRA chairperson Edel Comerford is hopeful that this event will result in some new homes being found.
“As you can imagine, with so many dogs in our care we are currently relying heavily on foster homes and external boarding kennels to deal with the number of dogs on our books. External boarding space is limited and comes at a significant cost to our charity; we are hopeful that this event will result in us finding new homes for twenty dogs and free up some space for the dogs currently waiting in the pound.
“Although we need space for our new arrivals, we also want to be sure that people have thought long and hard about the responsibility involved in owning a dog, and we will talk people through this carefully on the day” said Ms Comerford.
The dog adoption days have been extremely successful for the Galway-based dog rescue charity to date, with almost forty pups finding homes at the Puppy Adoption Day in early January of this year.
Visitors on the day can meet up to twenty different adult dogs and find out more information about the dog’s personality and activity level, as well as the type of home that will suit them best. Those interested in adopting a dog on the day will be asked to complete an adoption questionnaire and a home check is required.
“For those seriously considering adopting on the day, we encourage them to contact us via our website to arrange for a home check in advance of the event.
“People come from far and wide to meet our dogs, and many end up finding their perfect canine match at an adoption day”, added Ms Comerford.
All dogs are micro-chipped, vaccinated and neutered before going to their new homes and an adoption fee of 150 euro is recommended.
MADRA is a dog rescue charity based in Camus in Connemara. Annually the charity rescues almost eight hundred dogs, the majority from local authority pounds in Galway and Mayo. For more information on the adoption day follow MADRA on Facebook, visit www.madra.ie or text 086 8149026
