O’Flaherty ‘disappointed’ with no funding for improvements at Ballindooley Cross

No funding will be made available for improvements at the Ballindooley Cross on the Headford Road, a situation Independent Cllr Terry O’Flaherty has called “very disappointing”.

The Galway City Council applied to the National Roads Authority for various schemes throughout the city, including funding for improvements at the Ballindooley Cross area.

Problems are arising in the area as the Monument Road area is being used as a short cut from Ballindooley Cross to the Dyke Road.

“A residential country road is being turned into one of the most dangerous roads in the city due to a high number of motorists, many of them speeding, using this area as an alternative to the Headford Road,” said Cllr O’Flaherty.

“ One resident had her wing mirror taken off by a passing car taking a short cut, while another was nearly run off the road when she was trying to get out of her driveway.”

However the NRA grant did not include funding for this particular project. Although disappointed by the news, Cllr O’Flaherty said “other avenues are being explored for an interim solution” and city council engineers are discussing technical details so they can proceed with the project when the funds become available.
