Allotments are part and parcel of big city life in England, giving ‘green fingers’ a chance to indulge in growing plants, flowers, and vegetables, and now Galway could be following suit.
On Tuesday, a meeting of the Galway City Council’s recreation, amenity, and culture committee, agreed to proceed with proposals for an allotment pilot scheme for Galway.
A sum of €300,000 has been allocated under the capital programme for the scheme and Green Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin has requested a site on the upper Cappagh Road - zoned for agriculture and recently used for farming purposes - should be examined as the initial pilot site.
“It is important the initial project be in Knocknacarra as that is the area with the highest demand,” said Cllr Ó Brolcháin. “The site on the Cappagh Road is very close to the parks depot at Lough Rusheen.”
However the Green councillor believes that ultimately, allotments should be developed in all parts of the city.”
At the moment the allotments waiting list at City Hall has 53 people in the west of the city, 15 in the city centre area, and 16 people in the eastern part of the city.
