Public swimming pool needed for east side of city says Concannon

A drink and drug culture and anti-social behaviour among the youth in Galway City East will continue unless the area is provided with adequate sports facilities.

This is the view of Martin Concannon, the Sinn Féin Galway City East candidate, who says a public swimming pool is the most important sports facility that needs to be provided.

“Over the past 10 years housing estates in the East Ward have mushroomed and so too have the number of young people,” he said. “If we are to counter the drink and drug culture amongst the youth plus the anti-social behaviour that comes in its trail, then we need to have more than adequate sports facilities.”

Mr Concannon rejects the view that projects such as a public swimming pools are unrealistic at a time of economic recession.

“Public swimming pools should be seen as a basic part of the local infrastructure,” he said. “Investing in such projects will create jobs and the pool will pay for itself. Working people should not be facing the pain of this downturn but the big shot bankers, developers, builders, and politicians
