Getting Galway’s jobless back on the road

Free truck and bus training for unemployed

The Galway-Roscommon Education Training Board has scheduled a number of courses to provide professional driver training to job seekers.

In conjunction with Advance Drive in Salthill, the GRETB will be running a number of professional driver training courses in Roscommon town and Galway city throughout the year.

These full-time courses are fully funded by the local training board for people receiving social welfare payments. Each course lasts between seven and 14 weeks.

“This is a rare opportunity for job seekers to secure a fully-funded course to become a professional bus or truck driver,” says Philip Rice, chief instructor at Advance Drive. “The GRETB courses include on-the-road training for rigid trucks, articulated lorries, and passenger coaches. The classroom and practical elements of these courses mean participants will be highly employable across transport and other industries.”

Each course is limited to 16 places. To be eligible an applicant must be unemployed or registered with Intreo – formerly FÁS. Applicants must also pass a driver theory test, available at www.theorytest.ie Once that test is passed, applicants need to apply for a bus/truck learner permit from the National Driver Licensing Service (NDLS ). Learner permits are valid for two years and must be in date for the duration of the course.

A number of these courses will be run in 2016, the next HGV artic course and bus course will commence in March. The full list of GRETB courses can be found and applied for at www.gretbtrainingcentre.ie
